Did you realise BAFTA does more than just hand out rewards in the film and television industry? The British Academy Games Awards are held on an annual basis and honour outstanding creative achievement in the video game industry. The awards were first presented after the restructuring of the BAFTA Interactive Entertainment Awards, in 2004. Since this awards event first took place there have been 11 ceremonies. The last of which, the 13th British Academy Games Awards, was held on 6 April 2017, at Tobacco Dock in London. There are a number of different awards. So let’s look at the winners for each of them in 2017.
Artistic Achievement – Inside – a puzzle-platformer adventure game developed and published by Playdead in 2016, for PS4., Xbox One and Microsoft Windows. It involves players controlling a boy in a dystopic world, solving environmental puzzles and trying to avoid death.
Audio Achievement – The Last Guardian – an action-adventure video game developed by SIE Japan Studio and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PS4. In this game players control a boy who befriends a giant half-bird-half-mammal creature called Trico. Together they have to solve puzzles and explore different areas.
Best Game – Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End – an action-adventure game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for PS4. It is the final part of the Uncharted series of games and also features protagonist Nathan Drake. He has recently retired from fortune hunting with his wife Elena, and in this chapter of the game he reunites with his estranged older brother. Together with Sam and his long-time partner Sully, they search for Captain Henry Avery’s lost treasure.
British Game – Overcooked – this is a simulation game developed by Ghost Town Games and published by Team 17. It involves players in a co-operative experience, controlling a number of chefs in a kitchen. The kitchen has various obstacles and hazards for the chefs to negotiate as meals are prepared to specific orders under a time limit. As well as the Best British Game it also won the Best Family Game.
Debut Game – Firewatch – a first-person mystery adventure game developed by Campo Santo and published by Campo Santo and Panic. The game follows a Shoshone National Forest fire lookout named Henry. The game is set in 1989, following the Yellowstone fires of 1988.
Evolving Game – Rocket League – this is a soccer video game developed and published by Psyonix. It’s described as ‘soccer, but with rocket-powered cars’.

Game Innovation – That Dragon, Cancer – this is an autobiographical game based on the creators experience of raising their son Joel, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer at just one year old.
Mobile – Pokemon Go
Multiplayer – Overwatch – this is a team-based multiplayer online first-person shooter video game developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. Players are split into two teams of six, with each player choosing from a roster of pre-defined characters known as heroes.
Music – Virginia – a first-person mystery adventure video game developed by Variable State and published by 505 Games. The game involved graduate FBI special agent Anne Tarver as she investigates the disappearance of a missing boy in rural; Virginia.

AMD eSports Audience Award – Clash Royale – a freemium mobile tower rush video game developed and published by Supercell. It combines a number of different elements such as collectible card games, tower defence and a multiplayer online battle arena.
